Covid-19 in Madurai: 828 fresh cases reported, district records less than 1,000 after 22 days | Madurai News

MADURAI: After recording more than 1,000 fresh Covid-19 cases every day since May 7, Madurai recorded 828 cases on Saturday after 22 days. This is the lowest number since May 5. The numbers went as high as 1,538 on May 26. As many as 853 patients were discharged.
Though marginal, for the first time during the second wave, the number of active cases in Madurai dropped to 16,038 on Saturday from 16,086 on Friday.
There was also a drop in the number of fresh cases registered in the ten southern districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday. The total number of cases from southern Tamil Nadu on Saturday stood at 5,201. This number is the lowest since May 11.
For the first time after the spike in the second wave, the number of persons who got discharged (5,570) surpassed the number of fresh cases in a day.
All the southern districts recorded less than 1,000 fresh cases in a day after 22 days with the numbers coming down in Kanyakumari to 927 and Virudhunagar to 519. Tuticorin recorded 691 and Theni 592 cases.
Seven of the ten districts in the southern region had more people discharged than infected on Saturday – Kanyakumari (1,196), Madurai (853), Theni (705), Tuticorin (704), Tirunelveli (488), Dindigul (365) and Sivagangai (228). The total active cases in the region also recorded a dip for the first time after the spike from 66,928 on Friday to 66,456 on Saturday.
On the other hand, the number of deaths in the region continues to be a cause of concern as 106 died on Saturday.
Dindigul recorded the highest at 24 and is followed by Tenkasi — 19, Kanyakumari 15, Madurai 11, Theni 10, Virudhunagar 9, Tuticorin 7, Ramanathapuram 6, Tirunelveli 3 and Sivaganga 2. This includes 36 deaths of patients, who did not have any comorbid conditions.
