Covid-19: India records 1.52 lakh new cases, lowest in 50 days; 3,128 deaths | India News

NEW DELHI: India on Monday recorded 1.52 lakh new Covid-19 cases, the lowest single-day rise in 50 days and over 3,100 new deaths, lowest in over a month. India’s total caseload is now more than 2.8 crore.
Covid-19 cases
With 1,52,734 new Covid-19 cases the country’s total tally of cases stands at 2,80,47,534, as per the latest Union health ministry data updated at 9 am.
The last time India’s single-day rise of Covid-19 cases was less than 1.52 lakh was on April 10 (1,45,384).

The second wave is now receding across all states/Union territories except a few in the northeast and in Ladakh.
While fresh cases of the virus fell for the third week running, last week’s numbers showed the most comprehensive decline yet.
Infections have started to fall in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Assam — states that had shown a rising trend till last week.

Death toll
Meanwhile, with 3,128 new deaths, India’s death toll stands at 3,29,100, as per the health ministry data. The last time India’s single-day Covid-19 death toll was less than 3,100 was on April 27 (2,771).

However, the painfully high death count in the second wave is finally coming down. In the week ended Sunday, nationwide fatalities dipped by 17 per cent, the first decline in 12 weeks.
Coronavirus Live Updates
India recorded 24,372 fatalities on May 24-30, a drop of almost 5,000 from the previous week’s toll of 29,331. These included previous deaths added to the toll in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand during this period.

Prior to this week, the Covid death toll had risen for 11 weeks in a row as the deadly second wave left the country’s health infrastructure completely overwhelmed.
Weekly fatalities had last seen a decline in the March 1-7 week. In the month of May alone, the Covid toll in the country has crossed 1.15 lakh so far.
