CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin has asked the housing and urban development department to examine the possibilities of expanding the contours of the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA).
At a review meeting on Thursday, the chief minister took stock of various projects and schemes implemented by the housing and urban development department.
Pointing out that satellite towns need to be designed with the participation of different agencies and departments including education, health and Chennai Metro Rail Limited, he said that planning authorities must be created for major cities to boost infrastructure and regulated development.
Expansion of the CMA is hanging in the balance regarding whether the proposed 8,878 square kilometres comprising the entire Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts and parts of Ranipet district could be added to the metropolis. Currently, the CMA covers a distance of 1189 square kilometres.
Minister for housing and urban development S Muthusamy and senior government officials participated in the review meeting.
