CHENNAI: Three men, who were detained at the Vysarpadi police station in Chennai on Saturday night, escaped after pretending to fight with one another and after attacking a sub-inspector who tried to intervene.
Police said a special team, which was on a vehicle check, found three men roaming suspiciously. When the police asked them the reason for roaming, the trio — identified as Ajith Kumar, 24, Ajay Gupta, 22 and Jagadeswaran, 22 — gave different answers.
Interrogations with them revealed that Ajith Kumar had 24 crime cases pending against him at Kodungaiyur, MKB Nagar, Otteri and Pulianthope stations while Ajay and Jagaedeswaran were facing nearly 20 cases each. They were involved in murder and attempt to murder cases, according to police.
The trio were taken to Vysarpadi station where they were detained in a lockup. They were not handcuffed.
The trio pretended to pick up a fight with one another. Some of their relatives, who were standing outside the police station, created a ruckus demanding the release of the trio.
The trio broke windowpanes and pretended to stab one another. Sub-inspector Anand opened the lockup to control them. The trio stabbed him and escaped from the police station. Anand suffered a minor injury.
The police have launched a hunt for them.
