Upraised aims to bridge the talent gap for Indian start-ups

Upraised, an ed-tech start-up founded by former Airbnb executive Mona Gandhi, is focusing on upskilling the tech talent in the country, preparing them to match the needs of the leading start-ups and Unicorns.

Within two years, the company has placed 96% of the first 84 candidates successfully.

“We set out to solve the problem of bridging the skill gaps. The biggest challenge is the skills that the talent today have and the skills that the high-growth companies need from their product managers,” Gandhi, founder, Upraised, told ET. “The education teaches you the skills of yesterday, while companies need skills of tomorrow, and then there is nobody that’s actually helping them bridge that gap and that’s the gap that we set out to solve.”

Founded in 2019, Upraised was born to upskill millions of tech professionals in India who are unable to access meaningful employment opportunities.

The company has already raised $1.3 million in seed round led by tech entrepreneurs like Airbnb co-founder and CTO Nate Blecharcyzk, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma and CRED founder Kunal Shah as well as Lightspeed India and South Park Commons.

The company offers a 16-week upskilling program – ‘Career Accelerator Plan’ (CAP) – which is designed to not just bridge that skill gap but also get them a job guarantee at one of the top tech companies in India and abroad, or a full refund is offered. CAP claims to offer full-time product management jobs in over 300 companies hiring across India, SEA & Europe.

“Every year, almost 3 million people graduate in India, but 80% of them are unemployable because they lack the skills needed for jobs of today and tomorrow,” Gandhi said.

For CAP, candidates first take a proprietary Know Your Self (KYS) test to understand their strengths and blind spots. Basis that Upraised creates a customised learning program tailored to their individual needs and the companies they want to work for.

“This has unlocked hiring opportunities for people beyond the top pedigree colleges making these jobs accessible to anyone with the right skills,” she added.

Some of the companies that have hired the up-skilled candidates from Upraised include MPL, CRED, Unacademy, Freshworks, etc.

Apart from CAP, Upraised is currently offering ‘Preppa’ for interview preparations with experts and internship program Embark that acts as a gateway to full time opportunities at high growth start-ups right after undergraduate degree.

“Covid has significantly sped up tech adoption across the country, and we are seeing a new

start-up every week. This has led to a rise in the need for skilled product managers at Unicorn start-ups such as MPL, CRED, Zeta, Unacademy and many others who are looking to hire top tech talent. With the determination to groom highly-skilled world-class product managers, Upraised is paving the way to help students and job aspirants waiting to upgrade their careers,” said Gandhi.
